The catfish is AMAZING. It's well seasoned and not over breaded. Best catfish I've had on the this side of town. I wasn't a huge fan of the sides, that's why 4 instead 5 stars.
The Mac and the beans had a seasoning I couldn't get over. It gave me an under tone of Chile like green Chile or jalapeño. Apparently it's just bell peppers but it definitely changed the flavor. It gave an under toned pickled flavor I didn't enjoy.
Rags Real Chicken & Waffles is a little casual soul food restaurant located in Youngtown just next to Sun City. This isn't a fancy place and they don't serve fancy food. They serve home style food. Inside is small and they only have three community tables and four bar seats. The menu is limited and soft beverages and tax are included with the dinner platters. I saw a sign on the wall that read they are a B.Y.O.B. and I noticed that they do have entertainment and a dance floor.
We shared the chicken and waffle (white meat) and the chicken dinner platter. The chicken and waffle are fresh made to order so you do wait at least 15 minutes. I have to say all the chicken was fried to perfection. Even the enormous chicken breast was juicy! The chicken here does have a thin but crisp light cornmeal coating. They are fried so perfect that the chicken seems free of oil. The seasoning is very minimal but just enough. You almost just taste chicken. You can add salt and pepper to bump up the seasoning a little if you want and they do offer a few sauces. The waffle was good. The sides are like a relative made them. Portions are very large.
The people there are very sweet and welcoming and efficient.
A friend recommended this restaurant and I'm so glad she did! My roommates and I walked up and saw several people outside so we were thinking, "wow the wait must be super long!" But it was friends and family who were very kind and welcoming.
I got the white meat with two sides. Super good. Roommates got the chicken and waffle. Definitely wish I had gotten the waffle because I tried a bite and it was delicious.
