The smell upon entry is enough to make you gain 5#. Even at 5:00 pm, the selection was overwhelming. So many options, and they're deliciously priced, too. 5 pastries for $6. Then there's the honey, the caramel, the deli, the fresh tortillas. What a find for someone who isn't a resident of the area.
While I was raised in south Wichita, I have lived in New Orleans for 50 years. I was in town last weekend for a meeting and did some exploring to find new creative food in Wichita. While I did find some great places, the biggest surprise and most exceptional of all was the discovery of this Hispanic family bakery on Waco. I also taught ESL and have fallen in love with all types of international foods. I was literally "the kid in the candy store" there. So many wonderful Mexican pastries! I did not even know where to begin. Since it was my last day in town, and I was alone, I knew that I had to keep my purchases to a minimum. Whoa! Truly tough decisions. At 7 in the evening, the store had a continual stream of patrons. I had a cookie and a fruit (apricot) hand pie. Such a shame when there were so many wonderful breads, cookies available. Another thing I loved was the almost "plastic-free" environment. Yes, it is also a grocery store and pre-packaged items used plastic but all the fresh food was packaged in paper bags or boxes! I also want to refute the review of a person who felt that the personnel in the store were not personal. I think we need to keep in mind that this is a store owned and run by immigrants. They may also hire recent immigrants whose English abilities may be limited. The people in the store were efficient and competent. Please remember that if a person in an ethnic store or restaurant isn't "Chatty" that English may be a second language that they are working on. SUPPORT THIS STORE AND BE KIND!
Staff was friendly and baked goods were tasty. I'd have given 5 stars but pretty sure the items i picked up for my work colleagues were from the previous day as they had a bit of a stale taste.
