About

Don Ruben's, a family owned and operated business, has been a staple of the West Valley for generations. Raymond and Teresa Bonillas opened the first Don Ruben's in 1972 and quickly stole the hearts of native and non-native Phoenicians alike.

Flash to the summer of 2001, when Steve and Lené Bonillas re-opened Don Ruben's on 43rd Avenue & Cactus. It is always great to meet new customers, but it always makes The Don Ruben's Family smile a little bigger when customers of the original Don Ruben's come in and are pleased to experience their longtime favorite Mexican food. Tastes just like it did in the seventies.

We strive to present fresh and meticulously homemade Sonoran Style Mexican Food. There are flavors for EVERYONE.

Thank you for visiting and we hope to see you soon

Another great find!

Three of us decided on this restaurant on the recommendation of an acquaintance. This "acquaintance" certainly knew what great Tex Mex is all about.

Cheese crisps are kind of like Saguaro Cactus in that they are only found in Arizona. This place truly knows what a true cheese crisp is!

The salsa was excellent, the chips were fresh. In addition we also had chicken chimichangas, taco salad and chili rellenos and they were outstanding. The taco salad was the crown jewel beautifully presented with a crisp golden brown shell.

And, the price was right.

FABULOUS!
From the margaritas, to the chips and salsa, appetizer, and then dinner it was a truly authentic Mexican meal.
The chip were fresh and the salsa was mild, but they offer you a hot version, that when mixed together, is out of this world! The crisp was my least favorite - just cheese on a tortilla. It was a little greasy, but fine.
The Diablo Burro (donkey) was something I've never had before and after eating it... I'll never get another thing. It was spicy, but not so spicy it was inedible. If you like heat, this is for you. There was also a large plate of nachos, piled high, but needed a little more cheese.
The shrimp relleno broke every rule of seafood in the best way!
Drinks were STRONG! But a really good strong.

Call ahead to get a seat because by 5:30 there was a long wait and every table was filled. WORTH THE WAIT! And I can't wait to go back!

This is a great place to hide from your whiny kids! to be fair, quite a few people also had their kids with them, but I don't judge people for making poor life choices. ha.

On a more serious note, the drinks hit, pork is great, and the cheese crisp was an excellent introduction to local AZ fare. I really enjoyed the Pina Colada (don't judge me)!

So why not 5? Wife didn't "love" her food and the fried ice cream didn't "do the damn thang"... Just being honest.

This is he kinda place you go to hide from your kids and let Grandma hold down the fort... make sure you bring home leftovers or you are gonna hear about it later! Any place where the shopping center has the name of the restaurant at the top AND bottom of the sign listing can't half step!

First time at Don Ruben's with party of three plus one order to go. We were seated quickly at 1:30 on Saturday. Place was still busy.

The menu is large and what caught my eye was the salmon tacos. Ordered a large cheese quesadilla and they provide endless chips with several salsas. The salmon tacos (two) were very tasty. Salmon was grilled and served with spicy tarter sauce with fresh relish, served on soft double corn tortillas with rice and beans.

Place is family owned and everyone enjoyed their meal. Prices are $$ based upon the Yelp scale and meal was about $84 plus tip.
